About Me- Chrissy Skorkowsky

I began tutoring dyslexic children 8 years ago when my family lived in a remote town in coastal Alaska. We had discovered that my 8 year old son was dyslexic and the small well-meaning school in Cordova just didn't know what to do.

Having no resources for  dyslexia in our community, I had to learn everything that I could about dyslexia on my own. While on this journey I discovered that children with dyslexia can learn to read and spell thanks to a explicit teaching method called Orton-Gillingham or OG for short. This methodology is used by several research-based programs designed for dyslexic learners to greatly improve weak reading and spelling skills and is considered the gold standard for remediating the struggles caused by dyslexia. I opted for the OG-based program called the Barton System for my son.

At the time I worked for a marine science center. Coming from a background in science and education helped because everything to do with dyslexia is science-related. It is a brain difference, not a deficiency.

Working with my own son and seeing his reading and confidence improve excited me so much that I offered to take a few more children through the program and experienced similar success.

I was amazed, so much so that I decided that I would switch careers and have been working with dyslexic children ever since, first  for a local dyslexia center here in Fort Collins, Colorado  and now through my own LLC. It is my passion!
